Political & Development

Ghana’s political relations with Canada spans nearly 61 years of strong diplomatic solidarity, shaped by shared-values and membership of the Commonwealth the United Nations and La Francophonie. For more than five decades, Canada has been pivotal in development assistance to Ghana; and Ghana has been the venue where many young Canadians developed skills and expertise in development engagements. Priorities of Ghana Mission are to deepen political and developmental relations at the Provincial and Municipal levels in Canada; facilitate greater cooperation between Ghana’s Parliament and Canada’s legislatures, both at the Federal and Provincial levels; enhance governance development at municipal and local government levels; and actively work with Non-State actors – NGOs and philanthropic organizations to engage Ghanaian citizens in sustainable development initiatives. These initiatives are being actively pursued through:

  • Engagements with key Provincial political and legislative authorities. As part of this initiative, H.E. J. Ayikoi Otoo and teams from the Ghana Mission have been embarking on an active outreach across Canada – recent visits were made to Toronto and London in Ontario; Edmonton and Calgary in Alberta; Victoria and Vancouver in British Columbia. The objective of this outreach component of our political and development engagements is to cover all major areas where Ghanaians may reside, with a view to enticing them to invest in Ghana as well as for the attraction of Foreign Direct Investment by Canadian businesses not forgetting the potential for strengthened bi-lateral relations with Ghana.

  • Support for initiatives, especially by NGOs and philanthropic organizations actively working in Ghana. These include support for the Ghana Medical Help, a charity supporting community health in the Upper East Region of Ghana; Toronto SickKids Project in Ghana– and many more NGOs.
