The Consulate of Ghana in Toronto participated in the 2025 Afroglobal Excellence Awards, held on October 18, to celebrate the remarkable contributions of individuals and organisations within the Ghanaian Canadian community. This prestigious event, organised by Afroglobal Television, Silvertrust Media, and the Transformation Institute for Leadership & Innovation, recognises the outstanding achievements of those with Diaspora connections. Representing the consulate was Mr Kwaku Kankam, Consul/Consular Affairs of Ghana in Toronto.
At the awards ceremony, three exemplary Ghanaian-Canadians were honoured for their significant accomplishments:
- Lifetime Award: Mr Emmanuel Ayiku, Publisher and Editor-In-Chief of the Ghanaian News, recognised as the leading Ghanaian community newspaper in Canada.
- Professional Achievement Award: Detective Sergeant Don Yirenkyi, Head of Diversity, Inclusion, and Equity at the York Regional Police, acknowledged for his dedication to community safety and equity.
- Community Development Award: Mr Wilson Anoff, a Master Electrician and founder of Neighbourhood Developing Careers (NDC), is honoured for his commitment to equipping youth in marginalised communities with essential skills and mentorship in skilled trades.
The Afroglobal Excellence Awards celebrated around sixteen distinguished personalities across various sectors, emphasising the profound impact of people of African descent in their communities. Award recipients serve as role models in the Crossover Mentorship Program, inspiring youth leadership by connecting their successes to future generations.
The gala featured cultural displays, a fashion show, and live music, reflecting the vibrant community spirit. In addition, the Ghana Consulate showcased Made in Ghana products, artefacts, and tourism materials, promoting trade and investment opportunities.
The Consulate extends its appreciation to all attendees, including members of the African Diplomatic Corps and representatives from various levels of government, for their support in celebrating the achievements of Ghanaian Canadians.
