Passport Application Information

Applicants for Ghanaian passports must be citizens of Ghana by Birth, Naturalization, Registration, Adoption, or by any Enactment. Documentary evidence must be provided to support any such claim.

A Ghanaian passport is the only reliable and universally accepted travel and identification document for Ghanaians traveling abroad.

Issued to Ghanaian citizens only, a Ghanaian passport reflects the identity of the applicant as determined by documentary evidence of citizenship and documents to support identity.

Applicants are required to attend their appointments in person. Out of Province applicants may contact the Ghana High Commission in Ottawa for information on possible scheduled passport capturing outreaches in their Province.

  1. Complete the online application form.
  2. Select an appointment date and time.
  3. Make and confirm your online payment.
  4. Attend the Consulate/ Mission (subject to location selected) for in-person vetting and biometric capture.
  5. Provide a self-addressed prepaid return envelopewith tracking.

 

Please allow 6–8 weeksfor processing.

Note:The 15-day processing period applies only to applicants in Ghana.

 

The Consulate/ Mission will use the prepaid self-addressed return envelope provided to mail your passport.

Documents

  • Original documents must always be presented.
  • Copies must be certified as true by a recognized notary public .
  • The Consulate/ Mission reserves the right to reject or request additional documentation during the in-person vetting appointment.

For All Applicants

  • Printed passport application form (signed and witnessed/stamped by a recognized professional, including registration/ID number).
  • Self-addressed prepaid return envelope with tracking.
  • Canadian-issued government ID (e.g., Canadian passport, PR card, or driver’s license) – if available.

Note: Please do not wear white for your appointment. In addition, these documents are required for the following;


For Lost or Stolen Passports

  • Copy of the bio-data page of the lost passport or any another official Proof of Identity.
  • Original birth certificate (authenticated by the Judicial Service of Ghana and the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Ghana).
  • Police Extract or Report of lost passport.
  • Sworn affidavit or notary declaration by the applicant.
  • Any other relevant supporting documents.

For Damaged Passports

  • The damaged passport booklet.
  • Sworn affidavit or notary declaration by the applicant.
  • Any other relevant supporting documents.

For Change of Name

  • Original marriage certificate.
  • Must be supported by duly authenticated documents such as deed polls/ gazette/affidavit or notary with statutory declarations and marriage/divorce certificate.

  1. Photo Upload
    • Must be in PDF or JPEG format against a white background.
    • Full face, forehead, and ears visible.
    • No eyewear, large earrings, or decorative headgear is allowed. Religious headwear is permitted.

    Note: Physical passport photos are not required. Applicants must upload a recent photo during the online application, and a photo will be taken during the in-person appointment.

  2. Guarantors
  3. Applicants must provide two (2) guarantors who:
    • Are 18 years or older.
    • Have known the applicant for at least 2 years.
    • May be relatives.
    • Agree to the use of their name and contact information for the application.

    The Consulate/ Mission reserves the right to ask for additional guarantors. Guarantors by their undertaking are deemed to have agreed jointly and severally to pay all expenses that may be incurred by the Government in the event of the Applicant being repatriated or dying abroad.

  4. Witness
  5. Applicants must provide one (1) witness. The witness must:

    • Signs the application form.
    • Not be the same person as Guarantor.
    • Be a professional in one of the following fields: Armed Forces, Prison Service, Police Service, Civil/Public Service, Registered Medical Practitioner, Solicitor/Barrister, Head of Educational Institution, or any other registered recognised professional.
    • Have known the applicant for at least 2 years.
    • Should be resident in Canada and ideally a Ghanaian (Applicants may use a registered professional in Canada should they not be able to provide a witness who is Ghanaian. Please refer to the list of qualified professionals).
    • Be available to be contacted by the Consulate if needed.
    • Agree to their name and contact information being used for the application.

  • Payment is made online only using a debit or credit card.
  • Payments are processed in USD and converted to CAD by your bank.
  • Cash payments are not accepted under any circumstances.

In line with existing statutory directives, applicants are informed that all Consular fees are non-refundable once paid. This policy includes payments made for incomplete and/or withdrawn applications.
